Hydroponics

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in a water based, nutrient rich solution.  Hydroponics doesn’t use soil, the roots are supported with other types of medium like perlite, rockwool, clay pellets, vermiculite, coco coir peat moss and more.  The key to hydroponics is the roots come into direct contact with water, nutrients and oxygen.  The key advantages to this method of growing is plants grow considerably faster and produce up to 30% more.  Hydroponics also uses less water than soil growing.

Deep Water Culture

Deep Water Culture (DWC) is one of the simplest and most popular methods of hydroponic gardening.  In this type of system, the roots of the plant are suspended in a well-oxygenated solution of water and nutrients.  Using an aerator in the bottom of the reservoir, provides enough air for the roots to insure they don’t drown.  Because the roots are submerged in a nutrient solution, plants grow extremely fast and require very little maintenance.

Flood & Drain

Flood and Drain (Ebb and Flow) is a versatile hydroponic growing technique.  This system utilizes a nutrient rich reservoir with a pump controlled by a timer.  Determined by the plants’ needs, the pump will flood the root system with the nutrient solution.  After a selected amount of time the solution will drain back into the reservoir allowing the roots to enjoy a moist aerated environment.  This process will repeat periodically through the day.  This is a very effective hydroponic system from early stages of vegetative growth all the way to harvest.

Nutrient Film Technique

Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) is a process of running a shallow stream of nutrient solution across the roots of plants.  Like most hydroponic systems, it starts with an aerated reservoir with a nutrient rich solution.  The pump will push the solution up to a tray or gutter-like channel that is angled so that gravity feeds the solution back into the reservoir.  The roots of the plants will reach into the thin film of nutrient solution and continually feed.  This system has a lot of flexibility in its form.
